How To Get Your Old, Second Hand Mower To Start

Whilst there is nothing wrong with owning a second hand mower (quite often, some of the best and long-lasting models are the ones that are now considered ‘past it’), one of their most common problems is a refusal to start. Often, this is either due to a lack of fuel or a lack of sparking. If your old mower is experiencing this problem, here is how you can fix it:

Make sure that the mower has fresh fuel (if it has been sitting in the tank for more than three months, it’s not fresh). Drain the tank of all the old fuel, then fill it with a new supply. Try starting your mower now; if it turns over easily, you know the problem was with the fuel. If it still refuses to start, move on.

Unscrew the second hand mowers old spark plug and spray about a half second shot of starting fluid into the hole. Install the new spark plug you purchased and set the mower’s throttle cable lever to choke. Give the starter cord a pull; the mower should roar into life. If it doesn’t, give the cord another pull. If there is still nothing, it is likely that you have an electrical problem.

Occasionally, a second hand mower will fire when you pull the starter cord but will not start. Give the cord another few pulls and it should finally roar into life and stay running. If it continues to suddenly die, unscrew the spark plug and put another shot of starter fluid into the hole. Try the starter cord again; if it still dies, you have a carburetor problem.

Getting your old, second hand mowers to start can be a simply fix if there is simply no or bad fuel or if the spark plug is failing to fire.
