How To Give Your Lawnmower A Tune Up

If you want your lawnmower to last you will into the future, you will need to ensure that it is always kept in good working condition. A part of achieving this is by regularly tuning the lawnmower up; manufacturers suggest that you do this annually (early spring is the best time). A tune up will keep your lawnmower’s engine running efficiently, as well as reduce the wear and tear on its engine.

Visit your local lawnmower supplier and purchase an appropriate tune up kit. If there isn’t one available, purchase a spark plug, air filter and some oil, which are all available separately. When you get home, turn off the fuel’s access to the carburettor by closing the inline fuel shut-off valve (this will prevent fuel from leaking out whilst your working on the lawnmower).

Next, you can drain the oil out of the lawnmower using an oil fill spout. You should always ensure that you drain the oil into an approved container so that you are able to properly recycle the old oil. Then, fill the lawnmower with the new oil that you picked up earlier. You can also remove the spark plug and replace it with the new one you purchased earlier.

Take out your lawnmowers old air filter and replace it with the one you picked up earlier. If your machine requires a foam pre-filter, add a few drops of oil to it and work it into the pre-filter before installing into your lawnmower. If needed, you can also sharpen or replace your lawnmower’s cutting blades.

Remember that safety should always be your primary concern – turning the blades can actually cause your lawnmower to switch on, so before touching them you should always disconnect the spark plug and even place a plank of wood close to the blades to prevent them from moving.
