The chainsaw is a highly useful piece of power equipment – many homeowners find it vital in supplying their home with a constant flow of firewood and for keeping their property clear of fire hazards. One of the easiest parts of the chainsaw to damage, however, is the bar – the piece that extends outwards from the chainsaw’s handle and that holds the chain. If you notice that your bar is bent, it won’t take you long to fix it.
First, you will need to lift the blade guard into the up position and remove any bolts or screws that may be holding the chainsaw bar in place. Slide the chain of the bar, remove it from the chainsaws and take a good look at the damage it has sustained. If the bend is only minor, you will be able to continue on and straighten it back out.
Place the chainsaw bar inside a vise and ensure that it is clamped in firmly. Use a pair of pliers to move the bar back into a straight position. Remove the bar from the vise and lay it on a flat surface, such as a workbench or table. Use a rubber mallet to slowly work out the remaining bend.
To replace the chainsaw bar, slide the chain back over it and reattach it to the chainsaw using the bolts or screws that you removed at the very beginning. You will probably need to tighten the chain as well. If, after removing the bar from your chainsaw, you notice that it is quite severely bent, you should purchase a replacement bar instead, as it will be near impossible to straighten out without weakening the metal.
