When the chill of winter starts to creep away and the flowers in your garden are starting to bloom, it is time to pull your lawnmower out of the shed or garage and get it ready for the mowing season ahead. Seeing as your lawnmower has been stored away and unused for the last few months, however, it is important to ensure it is in perfect working condition right from the beginning.
Begin by completing a seasonal tune up. This generally involves changing the oil, replacing the spark plug and changing (or cleaning) the air filter. These lawnmower parts are generally the ones that do not take well to being left unused for months at a time, so it is always best to check them out. You can either do this yourself or take it to a professional lawnmower service centre.
Next, you should inspect the lawnmower blade and give it a good clean. In order for your grass to be cut efficiently, the blade needs to be straight and sharp – if it is dull, you can sharpen it or take it to a lawnmower service centre, but if it is bent you will need to replace it.
Finally, you should carefully clean your entire lawnmower. Remove any dried grass that has been left under the mowing deck from the previous year, check whether there is any fuel left in the tank and drain it, and wipe up any spills that may have occurred since you last used your lawnmower. By doing this, your lawnmower should be in optimal working condition for the season ahead.
