It is important to ensure that your lawnmower is kept clean, as this not only prolongs its working life but also ensures that it is working at its optimal level when in use. You need to make sure that you are cleaning your lawnmower safely to prevent injury to yourself and to prevent damage to the machine.
Before cleaning your lawnmower, ensure that you have plugged up the air filters with something waterproof, as any water that gets into the engine will probably lead to permanent damage. Then use your garden hose to spray the entire mower, getting rid of as much dirt and grime as you can. Be sure to give the underside of your lawnmower a really good spray, as this is where grass and dirt is known to accumulate.
If the dirt and grime on your lawnmower is particularly stubborn and won’t come off with water, you will need to use a scrapper to slowly and gently work the layers off. This most often occurs on the blades of the mower, and great care needs to be taken when cleaning them.
Always make sure to check the connecting shaft between the blades of your lawnmower and the engine. Weeds and other stronger grasses tend to wind themselves around this shaft, which can lead to the blades spinning slower or not as smoothly if not cleaned properly.
Once you have cleaned the lawnmower, leave it outside until it has dried completely and then wipe the moving parts with a lubricating oil. This will also help to prolong the life of your lawnmower.
Remember – if you own an electric lawnmower, NEVER wash it with water. Instead, use a bristled brush to remove the dirt and give it a quick wipe down with a damp cloth.
