How To Measure The Length Of A Chainsaw Chain

If you own a chainsaw, chances are that you have found plenty of use for it around your home, but have you noticed recently that it isn’t cutting as well as it used to? No matter how well you care for your chainsaw, the chain will eventually need to be changed in order to keep the machine running at its optimum.

Whilst most chainsaw chains have a length stamped on them, if you cannot find this you will need to measure it yourself. Begin by counting the number of drive links (or ‘teeth’) on the chainsaw chain. The number of teeth equals the chain’s length (make sure that you right this number down).

Next, you will need to calculate the pitch of the chainsaw chain. This is calculated by taking the distance (in inches) between any three rivets (the bolts holding the links together) and dividing this number by 2. Make sure that you also make a note of this number.

Finally, measure your chainsaw chain’s gauge in inches. The gauge is found by calculating the width of the notch in the drive link where it fits into the groove of the bar guide. Keep in mind that this will be a very small number, probably around 0.05 millimetres. Write down this number with the others.

You should always measure and count twice, as this makes sure that you have garnered the correct measurements for your chainsaw chain. The numbers that you have written down will now correspond to the length of the new chainsaw chain that you will need to buy.
